Our service helps with difficult conversations
These conversations can include:
What happened
The Impacts
How to begin to put things right
Conversations can be with:
family or friends
people who have come into your life
strangers
other individuals or community groups
The space will be voluntary and safe
Face-to-Face is often the best way to talk together
Zoom is also a good space to meet, especially where people live some distance away
A phone can still carry words and feelings - sometimes that is enough
Everard Halbert | Director
Sand Steps Ltd
BA (Māori Hons), LLB (Laws)
Restorative Justice Facilitator | Mediator | Trainer
Enrolled Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court
Everard Halbert has worked alongside Community Law Wellington & Hutt Valley for many years, strongly supporting the mahi we do in the restorative practise space.
His calm presence and inclusive, constructive approach to navigating challenges has had a lasting positive effect on the collective culture here at CLWHV.
Whilst his services are often in high demand across the region, it is always a huge help to be able to call on his expertise for some of the unique issues that come through our Restorative Justice service. We are privileged to have Everard’s support, and look forward to many more years of working with this Rangatira in the restorative & dispute resolution space.
Max Scott-Murray, Co-General Manager, CLWHV
We were starting a journey of significant change with our customers and community, however there was a low level of trust toward our organisation. When we embarked on a series of hui’s to listen and talk with our communities we engaged Everard as a Facilitator. Everard’s approach was both professional and personable – he engaged with the participants, maintained the energy of the group and encouraged open korero while keeping the discussion flowing. The objectives of every session were met and, more importantly, a solid foundation to rebuild trust was established.
I have no hesitation in recommending Everard as a Facilitator or Mediator and would, without any hesitation, work with him again.
Sean Horgan, Group Chief Executive, The Lines Company
Everard has run training courses for PACT Limited for the past nine years. The training is primarily the restorative justice training (one week long courses) required by the Ministry of Justice for new restorative justice facilitators. Everard brings many strengths to this role...and is able to draw on his many skills in challenging situations. From years of teaching te reo Māori, restorative justice and mediation, Everard is comfortable working with big groups. He is highly tuned to monitoring the mood and energy of the group and will adjust to meet the group needs...
Finally I would like to mention Everard’s generosity and willingness to help others. He will go the extra mile to support someone who is struggling...
Anne Evans-Scott, Director, PACT Limited
I had the privilege of working alongside Everard Halbert for three years while he served as a Strategic Advisor to me for Te Pae Oranga, a tier-one tikanga-led restorative programme delivered in partnership with hapū, iwi, and NZ Police.
Everard brings a rare blend of strategic insight, cultural intelligence, and genuine care for people. His work is consistently of the highest standard—thorough, well-reasoned, and focused on practical solutions. What sets him apart is his ability to navigate complex issues with humility and manaaki, ensuring that everyone involved feels respected and valued.
Through SandSteps, Everard continues to demonstrate the same qualities that made him an outstanding leader in our programme: deep understanding of mātauranga Māori, exceptional relationship-building skills, and a calm, thoughtful approach to even the most challenging conversations. He has a proven ability to bring people together, resolve conflict constructively, and influence positive change...
